Bute Golf Club’s “birdie brigade” was flying high again at the weekend when a new record was set for sub-par scores in this season’s Winter League stableford tournament.
Nine players in the field returned totals of 40 points or better as they made the most of calm weather conditions and superb greens to amass 27 birdies. The previous best tally was four weeks ago when 23 birdies were recorded by eight players.
Last year’s winner Andy Docherty (10) beat par three times as he returned the leading score of 44 points from a round of 70 to finish one clear of joint runners-up Graham McArthur (5) and Robert McKirdy (6) who scored gross 66 and 67 respectively for 43 points each.
