PHYLLIS McKIRDY showed no ill effects from her stint on hospital night duty as she took the top prize in Rothesay
Golf Club's Ladies' Open on Saturday.

Phyllis came straight from work to compete in the event, and shot an amazing gross score of 77 over the Canada Hill course to win the trophy by three shots, beating off competition from an entry of more than 60 players.

All the entrants enjoyed almost perfect weather conditions; despite the long period of drought, the course was in surprisingly good condition and thanks were expressed to the head greenkeeper Archie Stewart and his staff by gents' captain Norman Lamond.

Norman also thanked the catering and bar staff, who had coped admirably with the large number of competitors.

A large contingent of ladies from Skelmorlie Golf Club, who are regular supporters of this event, were well represented in the prize list, but top honours went to two local ladies: in addition to Phyllis's overall triumph, top honours in the silver division went to Elizabeth Speirs, who plays at both Rothesay and Bute golf clubs, with a fine net score of 65.

Honours in the bronze division were taken by Cath Stevenson of Skelmorlie with a net 70.

The subsequent prize-giving was chaired by Norman Lamond, who thanked Jimmy Dougal, the club's PGA professional, for all his assistance.

Tribute was also paid to starter Duncan Scott and the team of men who give their help so willingly each year for the event.

Four ladies enjoyed special mention for their hard work in ensuring the success of the day – ladies' captain Joan Torrance, Elizabeth McMillan, Maureen Wilson and Eileen Barker.

Joan Torrance then presented the prizes, and was thanked with the gift of a beautiful bouquet, presented by Fiona Cervoni.
