Rhu Amateurs 2, Rothesay Brandane 4
WES PATTISON came back to haunt Rhu Amateurs in style on Saturday, the striker firing a deadly second half double to take the Brandanes back to the top of the Caledonian League's second division.
Pattison scored twice when Rhu visited Rothesay back in February, and added two more to bring his season's tally to 15 goals as the Danes came from 2-1 down to chalk up their sixth league win on the bounce with another excellent team performance.
The game started with the hosts enjoying the advantage of what has become known as the 'Rhu Corner' - the slope across Ardconnel Park which always favours the team playing away from the pavilion end of the park - and the Brandanes knew to expect high balls into their penalty area at every opportunity during the first half.

That made it vital for the visitors to keep the ball on the deck for the first 45 minutes, and their on-the-ground approach paid dividends early on, with two early corners and runs from Pattison, Stuart Brady and Troy McKerrell putting the Rhu defence under pressure.

With captain Neil Whitelaw back in the team and pushing up in support of the front players the Brandanes clearly meant business, and their attacking approach paid off in the 11th minute when Eddie Lench fired home a fine left foot shot after a good team move.

But the visitors' delight didn't last long, and within a minute the home side were back on level terms when a harmless looking ball out of the Rhu defence found the hosts' number nine some 35 yards from goal, and he turned and hit a great strike past a helpless James Dunn in the Rothesay goal to level the scores.

With both teams still in the promotion hunt the game was being played like a cup final, with play flowing from end to end and Rhu, as per expectations, firing high balls into the Rothesay penalty area, though Gary McGregor was winning everything in the air, with support from Justin Tait, Joe McMillan and Alan Poole.

But it all went wrong for the Danes on 29 minutes when a slip-up in the visitors' defence, so strong up to that point, allowed Rhu to nip in and take the lead, very much against the run of play.

The Rhu keeper needed five minutes of treatment after an accidental clash with Whitelaw on 29 minutes, and when play resumed the Danes went all out in search of an equaliser, Stuart McKechnie firing just wide on two occasions before playing a low ball into the Rhu box which was missed by no fewer than three Rothesay attackers.

Rhu demonstrated how dangerous they could be on the counter attack when, despite all the visitors' pressure, only a great save from Dunn prevented the hosts taking a 3-1 lead.

But the Danes didn't allow that let-off to interrupt their rhythm and attack after attack on the home goal finally reaped its reward on 42 minutes when a lovely bit of football saw Lench head on to Pattison, whose inch-perfect pass set up McKerrell for a cracking right-foot drive to bring the half time score to 2-2.

Rhu tried to take the game to their visitors at the start of the second half, but the Danes soon settled down, and their three men up front soon began to stretch a tiring home defence to the limit.

On 50 minutes McKechnie fired just wide from 30 yards out after good interplay between McKerrell and Whitelaw, but the away supporters' frowns turned to smiles eight minutes later when Dunn fisted clear a Rhu free kick and Poole found Pattison in space, the Danes striker outwitting two home defenders before taking the ball round the keeper and firing it into the net to give the visitors a well deserved lead.

Tait, who had run his heart out, finally came off after 62 minutes, Iain Livingstone coming on in his place and from the start giving a fast-tiring Rhu defence all sorts of problems with his off the ball running.

The hosts, to their credit, were still trying to come forward whenever they could, and on 65 minutes they brought on their tall number 12 to try and boost their firepower - but Poole picked him up right away and soon had the measure of the big substitute.

Livingstone was unlucky not to get a better result after a fine run towards goal on 72 minutes, but the Danes didn't let up in their pursuit of the goal which would end the game as a contest, forcing corners on 78 and 80 minutes before McKechnie saw his free kick turned out for a corner eight minutes from time.

In a last ditch attempt to salvage something from the game Rhu pushed more men forward, and a good ball found the big number 12 out on the wing only for Poole to ease his opponent towards the touchline and win a throw in for the Danes.

As an added security Brady dropped back to help out in defence, and with five minutes left he got in a great tackle on a Rhu attacker, winning possession and playing a great long ball up to his strike partner Pattison, who wrapped up the points with a left foot shot past the Rhu goalkeeper.

This was another tremendous afternoon for the Rothesay players and their supporters - every member of the team played his heart out, and as a team they all believed in themselves and had no weaknesses on the day. Credit, too, to the coaching team for putting out a squad whose fitness levels were simply awesome.

Team: Dunn, J. Tait, J. McMillan, McGregor, Poole, N. Whitelaw, McKechnie, McKerrell, Lench, Brady, Pattison. Substitutes: Livingstone, McCready, Donald, Sprowl, Hassan.

Elsewhere in the Caledonian League second division, Cambusbarron didn't play on Saturday, while third placed Westerlands suffered more fixture frustration when their home game against Gartcosh United was abandoned in the 71st minute because of dangerous playing conditions, with Westerlands leading 3-1 at the time.

The Glasgow outfit now lie nine points adrift of their Rothesay counterparts, but have six games to squeeze in between now and the end of the season.

The Brandanes play their final away match of the season, and their penultimate game of the campaign overall, this Saturday, April 19, when they travel to Glasgow to take on Westerlands. Kick-off at Norwood Playing Fields in Dumbreck is at 2.30pm.
