ALISTER McFARLANE made it a successful start to the Isle of Bute Angling Association's new competition season when he captured the Smith Trophy on Loch Quien on Sunday.
In the car park beforehand conditions felt quite mild, but once at the water's edge there was a cold westerly wind blowing - not that that put the competitors off, with all in attendance really keen to get going!

Fraser McCartney was first to get
a fish, and was quickly followed by John Miller, and though heavy showers, with some hail, chilled the hands, by the afternoon the sun had come out to make it a very pleasant day.

Some very nice 'brownies' were caught, including two of more than two pounds for Alister, together with another over one pound for a winning total weight of 5lb 2oz.

Fraser McCartney also had three fish, weighing 3lb 10oz, to take second place, and returned another four, while John Miller was third with a nice fish of 1lb 10oz.

Last year's winner, Harry Haggarty, could only manage fourth place, with a fish of 1lb 4oz.

Most of the fish were caught on Black Gold Heads, Black Woolly Bugger, Bibio and Damsel flies. It was certainly a very enjoyable day, catching top quality brown trout, despite the weather!

The next Association competition, the Chrystie Trophy, will be held on Loch Quien on Sunday, April 13.

Meanwhile, nearby Loch Fad was a busy place over the recent Easter holiday weekend, with plenty of good fishing and some nice spring sunshine combining with the loch's natural shelter from the cold north wind to produce some pleasant angling conditions.

Some good bags were caught, including ten fish to Barry Ward of Dumbarton, mostly on a Red Shrimp fly.

Paul Gallagher of Cleland Angling Club had ten fish for 20lb 10oz, while clubmate Brian Spencer had seven for 23lb 14oz,with nearly all of their fish caught on Damsels and Blobs.

Peter Hart, also of Cleland Angling Club, fished bait and had six fish on Saturday for 19lb 6oz - including the best individual fish of the weekend, at 9lb 2oz - and another ten, for 17lb 11oz, on the Sunday.

Local angler John Miller had an excellent day on Easter Sunday, with nine fish, weighing a total of 20lb, mostly caught on a Hot Head Damsel.

Chris Tritschler also had a good late afternoon's fishing with five trout on the fly from the shore, while Martin Deighan, also fishing the shore, had six to his rod.

Black Zonkers, Black/Green Fritz and Damsels caught a lot of fish, as did the maggots and worms of the bait fishers, making for quite a dramatic improvement in just a few days.
