LIZ McHUGH of Ardbeg Bowling Club enjoyed a double triumph on Saturday as Bute Bowling Association's annual open bowling tournament reached an exciting climax.
Liz partnered Betty Morrow to the duo's sixth victory in the ladies' pairs final before defeating Craigmore's Greta Clark later in the day to lift her sixth singles title.

Competitors from throughout Bute and far beyond took part in the week-long
competition, which culminated in the playing of four finals on the Rothesay green throughout the final day.

The finals themselves were preceded on Friday night by the final of the tournament's day-long balloted pairs competition at Ardbeg Bowling Club, with Jean O'Neill of Paisley's Victoria Bowling Club and Jeff Long of London Fire Brigade defeating Peter Hartley of Largs and the host club's Gordon Wokes after five rounds of eight ends each.

The prizes were presented by association president Phil Kirkham, who had helped sponsor the competition with a trophy quaich, together with financial assistance from Lennie Moffat, William Hill and Ladbrokes.

The finals of the main tournament, sponsored by Argyll and Bute Council, began with the finals of the ladies' and gents' pairs on Saturday morning, due to Liz's involvement in the ladies' singles final later in the day.

The pairs final saw Betty and Liz take on Jean Hartley (Largs) and Joan Smith (Gallowhill), and though the off-island pair took the early advantage with a two and a one, Betty and Liz soon cancelled that out and established a 10-3 lead after seven ends.

A single at the next end from Jean and Joan was punished by a five and two singles from Betty and Liz to extend their advantage to 17-4 after eleven ends.

An exchange of singles gave the Ardbeg pair sight of victory with four ends still to play, and though Jean and Joan kept the game alive with a fine four at the 14th, a single apiece at the next two ends brought the contest to a conclusion, Betty and Liz winning 19-10 without the need to play the final end.

A closer match, meanwhile, was taking place in the gents' pairs final, with the Rothesay pair of Ronnie McCrae and Matt Martin up against clubmate David McMurchie and Tom Kennedy of Busby.

Although Ronnie and Matt raced into an 8-0 lead, they were soon pegged back to 8-6 after seven ends, and though a two and one brought the score to 11-6 in the Rothesay pair's favour, they then proceeded to drop five shots at the next to leave the game tied at 11-11 after ten ends.

A finely balanced match saw Ronnie and Matt move four shots ahead, only for their opponents to reply with two singles and a double to square the match once more at 15-15 with two ends remaining.

A single at the penultimate end gave them a slender one-shot advantage, and despite good lead bowls in the final end from David, these were cancelled out to leave the shot with Ronnie and Matt and the win by 17-15.

The ladies' singles final saw Liz McHugh back in action in the afternoon, this time against Greta Clark; early exchanges left the scores at 3-3 after four ends before a triple and two singles put Liz 8-3 ahead.

Greta, however, bounced back straight away and put together a run of her own to tie the scores at 8-8 after eleven ends; Liz quickly re-established a five-shot advantage to lead 13-8, only for Greta to fight back and close the gap to just two shots.

An exchange of singles and a further two from Liz kept the pressure on her opponent, now 16-12 in arrears, and despite a single from Greta at the next end Liz closed out the game with a finish of two doubles and a single to take the title.

Meanwhile, a devastating display of precision bowling earned Donnie McClure of Upper Cowal BC a second gents' singles title - 15 years after the first, way back in 1993! Donnie's opponent this time was Alan M. Loudon from Raploch BC in Stirling, but Alan was unable to match Donnie on this occasion, going down 21-5.

In his concluding speech, association vice-president Peter Thomson paid tribute to all involved in making the tournament week such a success, after which his daughter Susan presented the trophies.

The gents' singles winner presented Susan with a flower bouquet in appreciation, after which he paid tribute to the greenkeepers who had kept the greens mostly playable during a difficult week of unsettled weather.

Prize winners as follows.

Ladies' pairs: winners B. Morrow/E. McHugh (Ardbeg); runners-up J. Hartley (Largs)/J. Smith (Gallowhill); semi-finalists C. Lobo (Rothesay)/M. Watt (Dunoon Argyll) and M. Spencer/A. Whitelaw (Hillington).
