BUTE'S Jane Ross has been named in the 19-strong squad for Scotland's opening qualifying matches for the 2011 World Cup this coming week.

Jane, a former head girl at Rothesay Academy who now plays for Glasgow City LFC, is one of four attacking players named in coach Anna Signeul's squad for the double-header against Greece and Georgia.

Jane won her fifth full Scotland cap last Thursday in a friendly against Northern Ireland in Belfast, coming on as a substitute in the 76th minute and staking a claim for a World Cup starting berth by scoring the Scots' final goal in a 3-0 victory.

Four Glasgow City players have been chosen for the squad, with winger Rachel Corsie - who also scored in that Belfast win - and midfield duo Leanne Ross and Megan Sneddon joining Jane in the national team's ranks.

Speaking ahead of the team's first match, against Greece in Athens this Saturday, October 24, Anna Signeul said: "The first match in a qualifying campaign is always difficult - Greece are a physical side, but with good technical ability.

"They were beaten by Denmark at home in their opening group game, so no doubt they will be keen to make amends.

"We expect a tough game in Athens, but I think we can be quite confident after our win over Northern Ireland last week.

"We were very pleased with that overall performance, and we're determined to continue in the same spirit."

The Scots' bid to reach the finals in Germany begins at the Akratitos Stadium in Athens this Saturday, October 24, with a 2pm kick-off (UK time), and then take on Georgia at Hearts' Tynecastle ground on Thursday, October 27 at 7.30pm.

Jane, a sport and exercise science student at the University of Stirling, is also one of four players selected for a national sports scholarship scheme to have been named in the squad.

Jane and Rachel Corsie, along with defender Frankie Brown (Hibernian) and goalkeeper Jo Hutchison (Spartans), are all supported by Winning Students, a scheme led by the University of Stirling which provides talented student athletes with annual grants of up to £5,500.

Jane, Frankie and Jo are all part of the Scottish FA National Women's Football Academy, based at the Stirling campus, where the players combine their studies with a tailored football programme, led by academy coach and fellow Scotland internationalist Pauline Hamill.

On the domestic front, Jane has scored 12 goals in all competitions so far in Glasgow City's impressive start to their 2009-10 campaign - the girls have won every one of their first eight league matches and have made it through to the final of the League Cup, in which they'll take on Hibernian at Alloa's Recreation Park ground on Sunday, November 7.
