Euan McKay, Alastair Storrie and Liam Tait were all part of the Erskine Youth team which triumphed in the under-17 section of the Trofeo Mediterraneo tournament in Tordero, near Barcelona.
The trio helped Erskine to the top of their group with tw
o wins and a draw, and four knockout victories later they were celebrating a well deserved - though not entirely expected - overall victory, and a large trophy to boot.
The three boys told us this week their victory had capped a "fantastic" few days.
"We knew we'd do well but we didn't expect to win," said Euan. "It was an amazing experience."
Their campaign - featuring seven matches, each lasting for two 20-minute periods - began with a 1-1 draw against DE Zouaven 2, from the Dutch town of Grootebroek, but the boys really hit form in the next game, a 5-1 win over Dublin outfit Wayside Celtic, and topped their group with a 3-1 defeat of Danish opposition in the shape of Stautrup IF.
That earned them a second round tie with the wonderfully-named US Crazy Colombo, from Verona in Italy, and a 2-1 win set up a quarter final with another Scottish side, North Merchiston FC from Edinburgh, with a 1-0 victory seeing the team through to the last four.
Another close game ensued, but the Erskine side came out on top once again, defeating Swiss side FC Concordia Basel 2-1 to earn a place in the final against the Swedes of Stockholm IFM - and a 1-0 win in the final capped a marvellous few days for the team.
The Rothesay trio's role in Erskine's Trofeo Mediterraneo triumph was another high point in a successful season for the club, for whom Euan, Alastair and Liam have all been regulars throughout this season.
They've won all but one of their matches in the under 17 Paisley and District League championship, giving the team a great chance of capturing the title at the end of the season.
Erskine Youth was formed as Erskine Boys' Club in 1975 and currently fields boys' teams from under eight to under 21 level, and a girls' team too.
Notable graduates from the Erskine ranks include the former Celtic and Scotland defender Brian O'Neil, who retired from playing in 2006 due to injury; Derek Lilley, who began his senior career with Morton and had spells with Leeds, Hearts, Dundee United and Livingston; and Chris Aitken, who played for Clyde, Morton and Hamilton and is currently club captain at Stirling Albion.
