When the competitive football season kicks off next month, the Brandanes will have a busy time of it after members of the Caledonian League voted to reorganise their three divisions into two for the new campaign.
At the recent AGM of the Caley Le
ague clubs voted for a new league structure, with a top flight of 12 clubs and a first division of 15, handing the Brandanes a tough league programme of 28 fixtures on top of no fewer than four cup competitions.
With Drumchapel Amateurs having resigned from the Caledonian League, no clubs were relegated from the top flight and three - Strathclyde University, Viewfield Rovers and Giffnock North - were promoted to the Premier Division.
The First Division for 2008-09 will comprise Rothesay Brandane, Glasgow University, Stirling University, Hamilton FP, Westerlands, Cambusbarron Rovers, Rhu, Symington, Weir Recreation, Muirend, Gartcosh, St Mungo's, Milngavie Wanderers, Bearsden and Newton Mearns Rovers.
The AGM also saw the draws take place for the Caledonian League's two cup competitions - in the sectional League Cup, the Brandanes have been drawn in section 7 alongside Links United and Viewfield Rovers, and in the Queen's Park Challenge Cup the Danes' campaign begins with an away tie against Gartcosh United.
The season is due to kick off on Saturday, August 16. The extra league games may mean clubs have to consider playing midweek fixtures - how this will affect Rothesay, only time will tell. In the meantime, watch this space for details of the Danes' pre-season friendly matches.
