Members of the Buteshire Natural History Society were taken on a virtual tour of some of the restorations and new buildings commissioned by the third Marquess of Bute at their latest meeting this week.
Based on her book ‘The Grand Designer: Bute beyond the Gothic’, former Bute resident Rosemary Hannah entertained the audience with insights and fascinating detail on the journey that the Marquess made from a young man through to his death in 1900.
The ‘tour’ included glimpses of Falkland Palace in Fife and St Sophia’s Church in the Ayrshire town of Galston, as well as the extravagant neo-Gothic style of architect William Burges at Mount Stuart, the creation with which Bute residents are most familiar.
More in the next issue of The Buteman, on sale from November 15. Rosemary’s lecture will be delivered in the next few weeks at a variety of prestigious venues, including the National Gallery of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland.
