The Captain’s Collection comes to Bute

THE Dogstar Theatre Company’s critically-acclaimed production of Hamish MacDonald’s play The Captain’s Collection comes to Mount Stuart next month.

Fresh from a hugely successful run at this year’s Celtic Connections festival, the music theatre production of The Captain’s Collection was originally the brainchild of Bruce MacGregor of the award-winning Blazin’ Fiddles folk group.

The play vibrantly dramatises the life and work of Captain Simon Fraser - – fiddler, composer, publisher, dispossessed laird and Empire soldier – whose 1816 collection, The Airs and Melodies Peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland and the Isles, preserved a wealth of ancient Gaelic songs and tunes for posterity.

The cast comprises Matthew Zajac, winner of the best actor prize at the 2009 Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland, and Gaelic singer and actress Alyth McCormack, with live music fromJonny Hardie and Ingrid Henderson.

Originally commissioned by Highland Festival in 1999, The Captain’s Collection was first performed in the tiny Stratherrick Hall before embarking on a short tour.

The production was revived for a more extensive tour in April 2000 before being developed into an award-winning series for BBC Radio Scotland; a CD featuring the musical repertoire of the play was produced for the Greentrax label, and soon became one of the most highly-cherished albums of Celtic music of 1999.

The Captain’s Collection will be performed at Mount Stuart on Sunday, May 6 at 7.30pm - see the April 27 issue of The Buteman for a chance to win a pair of tickets for what promises to be a memorable evening.
