It’s that time of year again, with the summer school holidays fast approaching - and Achievement Bute is gearing up for another fun-packed programme of events and activities for children and young people.
This year, as well as the usual variety of indoor and outdoor activities for children, there are going to be several new events, some of which are aimed at a slightly older age group.
The exciting programme kicks off with a Parkour (free-running) workshop for teenagers. Parkour is a physical discipline involving gymnastic-like movements such as running, jumping, vaulting and climbing and the event will be led by expert instructors from Glasgow Parkour.
Those who prefer less physically demanding challenges may enjoy one of a series of mystery quests- working out cryptic clues, and exploring hitherto undiscovered parts of Bute.
Achievement Bute is also pleased to be out at Mount Stuart again, with a mystery quest there too, and as well as the ever-popular den-building week, there will be a series of “fairy trails” where younger children can find fairies in the woods, whilst watching out for the troll.
Another special event will be taking place later on in the summer when The Grassroots Zimbabwe Theatre Company from Bulawayo will be stopping off at Bute en route to the Edinburgh Festival.
Achievement Bute Manager Dorothy McDonald told us: “This is a fantastic group of six dancers, actors and musicians whom we are delighted that we have managed to book for workshops and a performance. They blend dance, music and drama into what looks like being a really exciting event.”
Achievement Bute is also keen to involve young volunteers in its summer activities, and is holding a volunteering information evening on Thursday, June 9, at 7.30pm in The Studio, Castle Street.
Dorothy said: “We know there are lots of talented young people on the island and we would love them to give up a bit of their summer holidays to use their talents to help out with our activities.
“We already have a small team of volunteers but we can still use more. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone over the age of 13 who is interested in helping with den-building, or is particularly good at art, music, dance or drama”.
All the details of Achievement Bute’s events will be available at the group’s AGM on June 15 at 7.30pm.
