Bute singer Aimee Gilmour won two top prizes at the grand final of the Open Mic UK singing competition at the O2 in London on Saturday.

Sixteen-year-old Aimee, performing under her stage name of Aimee Scarlett, won £500 of recording studio time after being chosen as the winner of the Extreme Exposure Award, given to the act who achieved the most high-profile publicity material.

Aimee was also chosen as one of two runners-up in the MUZU Exposure Award, and won promotional prizes on the MUZU.TV site with an equivalent value up to €5000.

Aimee was the very first performer to take to the stage on Saturday afternoon, opening the whole show with her version of Rain On Your Parade from Duffy’s album Rockferry - a full eight and a half hours before the winners were announced.

Acts took to the stage at the IndigO2 in London in front of a packed out crowd and a judging panel that included Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale and Ras Kwame, head of BGM’s Michael King, head of Future Music Chris Grayston, Kiss FM presenter Charlie Hedges, director of The Agency Group Geoff Meall, James Meadows from Universal, scout for Sony ATV and Atlantic Brian Mahoney and Ben Price, head of A&R at Future Music.

The overall winner of the competition was Siana, a fellow competitor in the 16 and under category.

Aimee’s dad John said in a Facebook post: “Aimee wishes to thank everyone for their amazing support. She has enjoyed a brilliant 5 months, which was top of by singing @ the O2 Arena, shared alongside 33 other talented young British performers.”
