Scots around the world celebrated Robert Burns’ life and work on Friday - but pupils at North Bute Primary in Port Bannatyne can tell you that Scotland’s poetry and culture is about much more than Burns.

The school’s annual Scottish assembly, held on Friday afternoon, featured songs, dances, poetry and music from across the Scottish spectrum - from traditional Highland reels and flings to songs as varied as Bonnie Wee Jeannie McColl and Eric Bogle’s The Green Fields of France.

The high point of the afternoon for many in the packed audience, though, was the side-splitting sketch performed by the school’s youngest pupils, based around the traditional song The Day We Went To Rothesay O and including hilarious translations of modern Scottish slang phrases and some spectacular costumes.
