Rothesay police probe Facebook abuse page

POLICE are investigating who is behind a Facebook page set up this week directing offensive and hurtful comments at women and girls on Bute - including pupils from Rothesay Academy.

Several parents contacted police after the page, singling out a number of named girls and young women for abuse, was set up last weekend.

The page has disappeared and resurfaced several times since it was first established.

Police officers visited the school on Monday to discuss the situation with campus principal Wendy Brownlie, and the matter has been passed on to Strathclyde Police’s IT investigations department.

Rothesay sergeant David Watt told The Buteman: “We have received several complaints about this page and we are taking the matter very seriously.

“Anyone setting up a Facebook page should be traceable through their computer’s IP address, so we are hopeful of being able to trace those responsible.”

Mrs Brownlie said: “Several pupils of all ages, including our school captains, have spoken about how angry they are at the content of this page - I haven’t heard any pupil try to defend it.”
