Sixty years after tying the knot at Renfrew’s North Church in June 1955, Rothesay couple Myra and Alister McGaw celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this week.

The couple met while working at the Rolls Royce factory in Hillington - Myra as a secretary, Alister as an electrical draughtsman - but Alister’s family hails from Rothesay, and the couple have lived since 1994 in the first-floor property in Argyle Street which was home to Alister’s parents.

A card from the Queen and a bouquet of flowers from Argyll and Bute Council, delivered by local councillor and Argyll and Bute provost Len Scoullar, marked the happy occasion.

Asked to reveal the secret of their 60 years of happy marriage, Alister said simply: “We’re a classic case of ‘opposites attract’.”
