Rodney Bewes brings solo show to Rothesay
Rodney Bewes brings 'A Boy Growing Up' to Rothesay Pavilion on March 27.
Rodney Bewes takes the idea of a one-man show to another level entirely.
While most solo shows will have a small army of behind-the-scenes fixers, managers, helpers and hangers-on hidden away while ‘the turn’ does his or her thing on stage, Bewes, best known for being one half of the 60s and 70s TV comedy duo The Likely Lads, treats the term literally - he really does do everything himself.
Bewes, who brings his latest solo show, A Boy Growing Up, based on the works of Dylan Thomas, to Rothesay Pavilion on March 27, has been acting and performing for 60 years. But he shows no sign of slowing down - or, come to that, of delegating the various off-stage roles to anyone else.
“I have no staff,” he says. “You can have a tour booker who will charge 20 per cent, you can employ a stage manager who has to be paid, and so on, but I think of something to do and I just do it.
“I phone all the venues myself - when I toured Three Men In A Boat, I towed a 24-foot boat with a wicker seat all over England.”
