The daughter of the Scottish rock guitarist Jimmy Bain, who died on January 24, has spoken about her father’s love for Bute.

Bain, best known as a member of the bands Rainbow and Dio, died suddenly aged 68 while on board the Def Leppard Cruise with his band Last In Line.

He was married to Lady Sophia Crichton-Stuart, elder sister of the current Marquess of Bute, from 1979 until 1988.

Before their marriage, excited newspapers noted that the pair had been spotted “living it up at the Reading Festival” in 1976, and speculated that Bain’s love interest might be “pressed into becoming the road manager of the new band which Bain plans”.

The couple’s only child, Samantha Embury, told The Buteman: “My father loved the island. He always enjoyed returning to Scotland after emigrating to Canada in the 70s and was proud of his Scottish roots.

“I think his favourite thing on the island was my grandfather [the sixth Marquess]! He adored him and they got on fabulously.”
