THE countdown is on to one of the most eagerly-awaited events in Bute’s summer calendar – the Isle of Bute Sailing Club’s annual raft race.
The date for your diary this year is Saturday, August 6 – that’s just four weeks away, so if you haven’t started building your raft yet there’s no time to lose.
The race will once again get under way at Children’s Corner, from where the rafts will make their way out into Rothesay Bay before turning hard to port and making hell-for-leather for the finishing line at the sailing club itself.
The reigning champions from 2010 are Bute Blacksmiths - no doubt their decision to put in extra work on their craft during tea breaks and lunch hours paid off! - while last year’s field also included entries from Achievement Bute, Bute Vintage Club and two entries, one male and one female, from Strathclyde Police.
As always, though, it’s not who crosses the finishing line first that matters the most – with the object of the game being to have fun, get as wet as possible, and of course to knock your competitors off their stride in whatever way you can!
Entry forms will be available from this weekend at Isle of Bute Sailing Club and the Isle of Bute Discovery Centre.
