A new collection of papers written by a Bute minister who also enjoyed a reputation as one of Scotland’s finest ornithologists has just been published as an ebook.

The ebook’s title, Scotland’s Minister for Ornithology, comes from the affectionate title given to the Rev J.M. McWilliam, the first honorary president of the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club, by other SOC members at the time.

Many of the book’s 50 chapters relate to the time McWilliam spent as minister of St Brendan’s Church, Craigmore, between 1915 and 1928.

They include papers he wrote for Scottish Naturalist on the roosting habits of Bute’s rooks, the breeding of black-headed gulls on the island, and the increased population of eider ducks on the Clyde.

Other chapters include amusing extracts from his previously unpublished autobiography, transcripts of his bird notebooks and fascinating recollections by former SOC presidents Sir Arthur Watson and Donald Watson.

The e-book edition of McWilliam’s The Birds of the Island of Bute recently entered the top ten list of best-selling bird books for Kobo ebook readers.

Another ebook by McWilliam, The Birds of the Firth of Clyde, is also available. All three titles can be downloaded directly onto Kindles, Kobos and iPads/iPhones.
