This photograph, which was published in the January 10 issue of The Buteman, comes from the archive of the late Andrew Gray, who amassed a large collection of school pictures during his long career teaching at Rothesay Academy.

The picture wasn’t supplied with any names or dates, but an appeal to Buteman readers for information has turned up trumps thanks to reader Neil MacLeod, who grew up on the island - at Kerrycroy, to be exact - but has lived in Strachur in Cowal for more than 50 years.

Mr MacLeod tells us the picture is of the Academy’s 2T class - Mr Gray’s own group - and that it was taken in September 1951.

Those pictured are as follows.

Back row: Andrew Whiteford, Charles Pandelus, Hector Whitelaw, George Hayden, Duncan McLaren, James Johnston, Donald MacLeod, David Richardson, Sam Moore.

Second row: Tom Jordan, Alan McDonald, George Duncanson, Willie Martin, William Mackay, John Moffat, David Meldrum, John Robertson, Richard Wild.

Third row: John Hunter, Donald MacNeil, David Balmanno, John Mackirdy, Alec Mackay, Iain Jamieson, Alistair Caskie, Leonard Ferguson.

Front row: Tommy Wilkinson, John Speirs, Andrew McKirdy, Ronald Fergusn, Duncan Middleton, Dennis Boyle, William Watson, Danny Bowie, Archibald Murray.

The two boys seated right at the front are Archibald MacDonald and John MacDonald (no relation, according to Mr MacLeod).
