For this week’s trip into the archives we delve into the collection of reader Crawford Howat, and a picture of the staff of Rothesay Town Council taken in the mid-1960s.

There are plenty of pictures out there of Rothesay’s elected councillors, provosts and bailies, but this is the first we’ve seen from this era of those who actually worked for the council.

Several of those pictured are still very active in the community on Bute today - how many can you recognise without seeing the names?

The group comprises the following:

Back row L-R: Jimmy Stewart, Henry McRobbie, John Thomson, David Meldrum, John McLachlan, Dick McDonald.

Second row: Ian Sinclair, Mr Wilson, Crawford Howat, James McEwan, Hugh Campbell, Ian Irving, Dugald Muir, John Noddings.

Third row: Anne McIlroy, Jim Cassidy (also known as ‘Sparra’), May Mullen, Jill Dempster, Marion Gordon, Cathy Campbell, Caroline Dobbie, Jean Green, Cathy Dewar, Ann Galbraith, Evelyn Smith, Doreen Shaw.

Front row: Bill Crosbie, Margaret H.M. Scott (depute town clerk), Alex Lindsay (town clerk), James Robertson, John Cullen (procurator fiscal).
