Nostalgia: The day the Queen came to Kilchattan Bay

This week’s ‘Bits from Bygone Bute’ picture was supplied by reader Julia Craig, who was brought up on Bute but now lives in Troon, and was inspired by a picture we featured in January of a visit to Bute by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.

That previous image showed the royal couple arriving at Rothesay pier on August 11, 1958; Julia’s snap shows them about to depart, later the same day, from the old steamer pier in Kilchattan Bay.

The royal visit was the last significant use for the pier before its demolition, and in fact the only significant use for the pier after the final steamer calls in September 1955, following which it was taken over by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation “for the use of the state”.

Do you have any memories of that day in 1958 - or pictures of other royal visits to the island? If so, we’d love to hear from you - give us a call on (01700) 502503 or email news@buteman.com with your recollections.
