MSP opens new Colintraive sculpture park

EDUCATION minister and Argyll and Bute MSP Michael Russell officially opened the new Caol Ruadh Sculpture Park in Colintraive this week.
The opening of the new outdoor gallery on the shores of the Kyles of Bute, which has been set up to showcase and sell contemporary sculpture created in Scotland, was attended by more than 150 people.
Gallery founder Karen Scotland said: “Weather and landscape has always been fundamental to my experience of Argyll and today has not disappointed.
“The elements have provided a spectacular backdrop for the sculpture and we are delighted that so many people braved the conditions to celebrate this very exciting addition to the Scottish art scene.”
Mr Russell, who lives in nearby Glendaruel, said on his blog: “I was very taken with a whole range of things including Ilona Morrice’s beautiful, slightly whimsical but very moving piece which places her sculpture entitled ‘Brendan Voyage’ - a stylised, archaic view of pilgrimage and rough seas - within a slate river bed shape laid out amongst grass.”
The park, in the gardens of the 20-acre Caol Ruadh estate, is surrounded by native woodland, creative landscaped gardens and the statuesque late Victorian Caol Ruadh house itself.
