A report on the condition of headstones in the island's four cemeteries was brought before Argyll and Bute Council's Bute and Cowal area committee on Tuesday.

More than three hundred headstones in Bute’s four cemeteries are currently unsafe and awaiting repair, according to figures published this week.

A paper considered by Argyll and Bute Council’s Bute and Cowal area committee on Tuesday revealed that there are 151 unsafe and untreated headstones in Barone cemetery, 86 in Rothesay, 54 in Kingarth and 19 in North Bute.

The same paper revealed that trials of a substance known as Wet Grab had been carried out on 30 headstones at Kingarth, but that only ten of those 30 were still secure.

The report, prepared by Jim Smith, the council’s head of roads and amenity services, stated: “It is clear given information from this report that this is not an economic or trustworthy short-term fix as hoped, possibly due to our climate.

“We will need to consider alternative ways of carrying out quick fix repairs to lawn-type memorials.”
