Bute’s new-look community radio station, Bute Island Radio, was officially launched this week.

The merger of Bute FM, which began broadcasting on 96.5 FM and online in 2009, and the internet-only Radio Bute actually took effect in February, but the official launch was delayed until after the inaugural AGM of the new station and the installation of a new democratically-elected committee.

Speaking at Thursday’s launch event, the station’s chairman, Chris Cobain, thanked the organisation’s directors, volunteers, sponsors and supporters and said: “The station is not just about being a medium for people sharing their taste in music – it should also be a tool for education, information and diversity.”
