Plans to make sure Bute, and Argyll and Bute as a whole, is better prepared for the extremes of winter weather have been explained by the local authority this week.
Following a visit to the island by MP Alan Reid this week, during which he told The Buteman that winter resilience was the major concern raised by constituents, we asked Argyll and Bute Council what steps had been taken to ensure the authority and the community is able to deal better with any repeat of the January storms which left the island without power for the best part of three days.
A spokesperson said: “A ‘Guide to helping your community prepare an Emergency Plan’ has been created and issued to all community councils (50 plus) in Argyll and Bute.
“Assistance was sought from Argyll Voluntary Action in this process and our voluntary partner agencies continue to be involved in our resilience planning process.
“This has also been issued to all elected members and all partner agencies. We have also made the emergency plan template available for download from our website.
“Two community resilience events, in Dunoon and Oban, have been arranged with our partners and these will take place on November 7 and 13.
“Argyll and Bute has supported the Scottish Government’s Ready for Winter campaign which will launch on October 22.
“The Scottish Government road shows will be in two locations in Argyll and Bute – Rothesay on November 19 and Campbeltown on November 20. Our civil contingencies team will be at these events.
“A Winter Weather Ready leaflet which contains information on gritting routes and personal resilience will be distributed across the area.
“We have purchased supplies of LED lamps, foil blankets, wind up torches, sleeping bags, universal car mobile phone chargers, flasks for hot water etc. These are in the process of being delivered to social work departments. Supplies have already been delivered to Rothesay.
“We will let people know about any service disruptions, road closures and school closures via our website (www.argyll-bute.gov.uk) and our Twitter feed (@argyllandbute).”
