West Island Way named as one of Scotland’s best walks
BUTE’S West Island Way has been officially named as one of the top 20 walks in Scotland.
The 28-mile Way is the last (though only alphabetically!) of the featured walks in a new booklet produced by VisitScotland and Scottish Natural Heritage, Discover Scotland’s Great Trails, stretching from the Moray coast to the Solway Firth.
Of the West Island Way, the booklet says: “Size isn’t everything, and most of Bute’s remarkable treasures are within easy reach of this island trail.
“Attractions range from isolated and atmospheric sixth-century monastic ruins to the imposing bulk of Rothesay Castle, and the astounding neo-Gothic feat of engineering that is Mount Stewart [sic] house.
“Bute Museum’s extraordinary collection includes worked flints from the Mesolithic period, stunning Neolithic pots and Bronze Age jewellery, vessels and tools.”
