MORE than 70 immaculately-preserved vintage tractors assembled on Bute on Saturday for the Bute Vintage Club’s annual charity road run - attracting hundreds of fascinated spectators to the Rothesay promenade.

Seventy-two entries were received for the popoular annual event, which this year raised money for North Ayrshire Cancer Care and the paddle steamer Waverley.

In addition to the healthy representation from Bute’s own farmers and vintage vehicle enthusiasts, ‘overseas’ entries to this year’s event came from as far afield as Galloway, Lanarkshire and Kintyre - many keener than ever to show off their vehicles after the announcement on Friday of the cancellation of the Ayrshire Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club’s annual rally, due to take place on July 22.

The fleet of tractors began assembling on the prom at 10am, and was waved off in style 90 minutes later by actor, entertainer and Rothesay lover Johnny Beattie.

The route of this year’s road run took in Port Bannatyne, Ettrick Bay, Ballianlay, Scalpsie, Ambrismore, Scoulag Moor, Bruchag, and the grounds of Mount Stuart before returning to Rothesay and the terminus at Isle of Bute Sailing Club on Ardbeg Road.
