A lone piper played on Rothesay pier on Friday as a former Bute resident who served in the Royal Navy for more than 20 years departed the island for the last time.

The body of Commander Ian Hamilton, who died on February 9 at the age of 103, was piped on board MV Argyle, en route to his funeral at Greenock Crematorium, by Rothesay Academy pupil Mark McLachlan.

Commander Hamilton, who lived on Bute until shortly after his hundredth birthday in January 2011, when he moved to the Erskine home for former service personnel at Bishopton in Renfrewshire, served in the Royal Navy from 1936 to 1957, and received 14 medals or clasps in recognition of his service throughout the world.

An obituary was published in the February 21 edition of The Buteman.
