Trading standards warning over advertising calls

Argyll and Bute Council’s trading standards service is issuing a warning to local businesses about unsolicited phone calls offering advertising space following a spate of calls across the area.

Argyll and Bute businesses are being advised to be extra careful when dealing with any telephone calls from companies offering advertising in community-type calendars or magazines.

Reports have been received that an England-based company has been contacting businesses asking them to sign up for adverts without making it clear that they have no connection with any local publications.

They may also send an invoice and insist on payment when no contract or agreement has been made.

The authority’s lead councillor for regulatory services, Sandy Taylor, said: “Argyll and Bute Council advises all businesses to confirm the identity of anyone offering them advertising space before agreeing to any contract or payment, to check all invoices received and only to pay for advertising they have expressly agreed to.

“We would like to make it clear that this warning does not apply to calls from legitimate businesses selling advertising space locally.”

If any businesses have been contacted by a company offering advertising in this way and believe they were misled , or require further information, please contact Argyll and Bute Council’s Trading Standards team on 01546 604801.
