Six illegal immigrants arrested in Rothesay

Six illegal immigrants were arrested in Rothesay on Wednesday as part of Strathclyde Police’s ongoing Operation Myriad initiative.

The arrests were made under the Immigration Act 1971, while a four-figure sum of cash was also seized under teh Proceeds of Crime Act during what police described as a “successful operation at various locations in Rothesay”.

Inspector Gordon Anderson, the senior police officer based on the island, said: “The operation continues to be a success and the multi agency approach to addressing local issues has certainly been benefical.

“Operation Myriad continues to tackle local issues assisted by partner agencies to achieve positive results.”

Local efforts under Operation Myriad have resulted in a high profile police presence on Bute over recent days, particularly on Friday and Saturday.

“I want the public to be aware that we are committed to tackling drug offences, antisocial behaviour, violent crime and road traffic offences amongst other local policing issues,” Inspector Anderson continued.

“On Friday we had approximately 30 officers involved in Operation Myriad addressing local problems on Bute. Local officers working along with specialised depts jointly addressed the aforementioned issues.

“Throughout the weekend officers continued with the high visibility patrols in the town centre including visiting licensed premises.

“On Saturday we had officers working in partnership with Calmac to help address any issues on ferries. The operation included the presence of the police dog branch.

“We have certainly had successes already including detections for drug offences, drink drivers, speeding motorists, careless driving, mobile phone use in vehicles, driving licence offences and we will continue as Operation Myriad progresses.

“Many partner agencies have also helped the aforementioned operations and a further update will be issued at the conclusion.”
