Rothesay Academy’s top academic performers received their awards and certificates at the school’s annual prizegiving ceremony at Rothesay Pavilion on Friday morning.

The recipients of awards and certificates for general academic excellence and endeavour were presented with their prizes by Michael MacDougall, a pupil at the Academy from 1993 to 1999 who is now the regional secretary of the Professional Golfers’ Association in Scotland.

Mr MacDougall told the gathering of pupils, staff, family and invited guests: “I’ve benefited greatly from the experiences I’ve had growing up in this community and going to Rothesay Academy.

“There are a few guiding principles I’ve found it useful to bear in mind since I left the island: firstly, travel if you can, and try to experience other peoples and cultures and see things from other people’s points of view.

“Remember that you get out what you put into things, so the harder you work at something, and the more effort you invest, the greater are the chances you will reap the rewards.

“It’s good to have personal goals and to aim high. Whatever you do, strive to be the very best you can possibly be - every time you achieve your goal, you will be amazed at what you can become.

“And lastly, enjoy what you are doing - whatever you choose to do, have fun doing it.”

In addition to the presentation of the 2011-12 academic prizes, Friday’s ceremony also included the appointment of the Academy’s new school and house captains, as follows.

School captains - Carly Willcocks and Sophie Duncan.

House captains - Chloe Nellis and Ryan McCulloch-Kean (Ettrick), Megan Morrison and Chloe Woollcott (Kames), Alison Shaw and Laura Sprowl (Scalpsie).
