Rothesay Sheriff Court closure proposal published
The Scottish Courts Service has announced plans to shut Rothesay Sheriff Court as part of a programme of efficiency savings – and to transfer Rothesay court business to Greenock.
The proposal to shut the Rothesay court is contained in a consultation on Shaping Scotland’s Court Services, published on Friday.
Interested parties have until December 21 to comment on the proposals, which are aimed at consolidating court services in fewer locations.
The consultation paper also proposes bringing an end to jury trials in Greenock, which would mean any serious criminal cases in Rothesay requiring a jury verdict would be held in Paisley.
Rothesay Sheriff Court currently sits on one day a week at Argyll and Bute Council’s local office at Eaglesham House in Rothesay, having moved out of its original home in the town’s Castle Street in 2005.
The proposal, if confirmed, would be implemented during the 2013-14 financial year.
