Rothesay sheltered housing services under threat

Bield Housing Association plans to introduce major changes to tenant services at its two sheltered housing complexes on Bute, Foley Court (pictured) and Rothesay Court.

PLANS to slash services at two Rothesay sheltered housing complexes have come under fire this week.

Bield Housing Association, a registered Scottish charity, has written to tenants stating that as a result of the change from sheltered housing to a new ‘retirement housing service’, local staff will only work from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, and that a number services would no longer be provided on site, including help with health or care emergencies and the hands-on organisation of social activities.

In a brochure to tenants, Bield’s chief executive Brian Logan said the change would enable the organisation “to provide housing and tenancy support services that are affordable, sustainable and better suited to every individual”.

But Rothesay Court resident Peter Hamilton, who is also a member of Bute Community Council, told BCC’s monthly meeting on Wednesday: “Bield have done this without consultation and without any reference to the tenants in Rothesay Court or, as far as I know, in Foley Court.

“I sold a very nice flat in Glasgow ten years ago and moved into Rothesay Court on doctor’s advice. Now, with these changes, I’ll be in exactly the same position as ten years ago – and there’s no pledge to reduce rents.”

Mr Hamilton also said Bield had claimed the changes were known about and supported by local councillors – something flatly denied by Len Scoullar, Robert Macintyre and Isobel Strong, who were all present at Wednesday’s meeting and who all said they had no knowledge of the changes until receiving a letter at the same time as the local Bield tenants.
