Elizabeth McLean and her husband Malcolm are celebrating after Elizabeth won 10,000 on the People's Postcode Lottery.

Rothesay resident Elizabeth McLean was the talk of the town this weekend after scooping a £10,000 prize with the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Retired council worker Elizabeth, who lives in the town’s Bridge Street, was celebrating after her postcode, PA20 0HS, was drawn as the winning Saturday Street Prize in the charity lottery.

Speaking about her win, Elizabeth laughed; “News travels fast on the island. Nothing much happens so when something like People’s Postcode Lottery arrives on the island, everyone wants to know. I’ll certainly be drumming up more players now that’s for sure.

“I just can’t believe the win though. I was absolutely flabbergasted. I’m just starting to settle down now and take it in.

“You just don’t know what to spend it on, I think a holiday to somewhere sunny sounds right. But I think once we’ve taken it all in, we’ll know how to spend it.”

Elizabeth and her husband Malcolm have three children, two of whom still live on the island, and seven grandchildren, so that decision may already be out of the couple’s hands.

The couple – a retired local builder and council worker – plan to celebrate their win with a fish supper.

“We live the quiet life now,” laughed Elizabeth. “Gone are the days when we would go down to the pub and meet up with everyone. I think we’ll just celebrate the win as a family.”

People’s Postcode Lottery players have raised more than £23.9 million for good causes throughout Great Britain, including more than £270,000 to 47 projects in the local area.

Among the PA postcode area projects to benefit from that cash pot is the Bute Community Land Company, which secured funding from the People’s Postcode Trust, a grant-giving organisation made possible with the support of the charity lottery players.

BCLC used the funding for a ‘Show & Tell’ project, which saw improvements to the local community forest, through the introduction of signs and information about the interesting focal points found inside.

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador and Street Prize Presenter Judie McCourt said: “It was great to meet our winner Elizabeth and her husband Malcolm – they were dream winners. We’re sure they will have a great time on holiday and spoiling their seven grandchildren.

“Congratulations again and thanks to players for their continued support of the many fantastic good causes all across the country.”
