Rothesay raft race goes with a splash

Hundreds of spectators lined the Rothesay seafront on Saturday to cheer on competitors in one of the most popular events of the island’s calendar - the Isle of Bute Sailing Club’s annual raft race.

Seven rafts set off from Children’s Corner just after 1pm - some clearly built with victory in mind, others looking pretty spectacular before they entered the water, only to disappoint once afloat.

Among the latter was the entry from local bus company West Coast Motors, whose ‘Service 490 to Wemyss Bay’ never looked remotely likely to reach that particular destination, and whose crew eventually decided the quickest route to the finishing line at the sailing club’s Ardbeg Road HQ lay in walking along the shallow sea bed and pushing their craft along.

Similarly afflicted was the Glenburn Hotel’s raft Searns Haig crewed by ‘GBH Experience’, which barely made it as far as Rothesay Pavilion, the halfway mark of the course, before being abandoned on the shore, its crew instead opting to cut their losses by making for dry land.
