The founder of the Baird of Bute Society has praised the two Rothesay Academy pupils who took part in a groundbreaking scholarship in Canada set up by the organisation.

Chris Markwell spoke to The Buteman as Bonnie Caldwell and Joshua McFadden returned to Bute after three weeks in and around Toronto on the Baird of Bute Society’s Canadian Science Scholarship.

“Bonnie and Joshua were an excellent selection,” Mr Markwell told The Buteman.

“They are bright, compatible, energetic, diligent and displayed a keen thirst for all that was presented.

“This year’s activities have been used by me to create a template for subsequent scholarship programmes and I am very pleased to announce that all venues and participants are solidly in agreement to continue their involvement in years to come.

“Bonnie and Joshua have been very forthcoming in their comments regarding the progamme and this will be invaluable in years to come, especially in accommodating participants who may well have no prior knowledge of one another and be from diverse regions of Scotland.”

* You can read Bonnie and Joshua’s own reflections on their time in Canada in this week’s issue of The Buteman - on sale from Thursday, June 12.
