Pupils from Rothesay Primary School spent Friday afternoon toasting marshmallows around a bonfire in the grounds of Mount Stuart as part of their ‘Forest Schools’ education programme.

The course has taught pupils the art of tying knots, identifying trees, building dens and shelters, erecting and putting away tarpaulins, how to build and behave safely around bonfires - and, on Friday, just how long to toast your marshmallow before it gets too hot!

With the pupils on Friday were teachers Maureen Shaw and Michelle Fisher, who have both achieved an OCN level 3 qualification in forest skills, allowing them to work at instructor level with future groups of pupils.

“It’s all about emotional health and feeling good as well as learning useful outdoor skills,” Mrs Shaw said.

“We’ve started a Forest Schools programme with our pre-5 children as well and we’re looking forward to passing on our skills to more pupils in the future.”
