Rothesay Academy pupils Bonnie Caldwell and Joshua McFadden are nearing the end of their second week in Canada on the Baird of Bute Society’s Canadian science scholarship.

Much of their second week has been spent in and around the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus, workplace of Professor Patrick Gunning, who hails from Bute and is gaining recognition around the world for his work on finding a cure for cancer.

The week began with an introduction to the members of the Gunning Group, the research team led by Prof Gunning, and the duo went on to spend time with team members working on organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, molecular biology and more, as well as conducting an experiment of their own.

Away from the lab, Bonnie and Joshua have visited Ripley’s Aquarium, Toronto Island, the CN Tower and enjoyed an introduction to ice hockey and baseball through the Toronto Marlies and the legendary Toronto Blue Jays.
