Pupils from Rothesay Academy have been spending the week at workplaces on and off Bute as part of the school’s annual S4 work experience programme.

One of the more unusual workplaces to take part in the scheme this year was NHS Lothian’s laboratories at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, where pupil Nisha Middleton spent five days witnessing and taking part in some cutting-edge genetic research.

Nisha said: “The first part of my week was spent in a molecular genetics lab and then I worked in the cytogenetics lab. I witnessed everything from the extraction of DNA from blood and tissue samples to the analysis of chromosomes.

“The main function of the labs is to determine whether any genetic disorders, including cystic fibrosis and different types of cancers, are present in somebody’s DNA.

“I observed all the techniques involved in DNA analysis and learnt so much amount about genes and chromosomes.

“I really enjoyed my experience in the labs and I am considering a career in this field.”
