Rothesay pupil elected to Scottish Youth Parliament

Rothesay Academy pupil David McLaughlin has been elected as a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament for Argyll and Bute.

David, 17, was one of four candidates fighting for the two seats representing Argyll and Bute’s young people.

Though voting closed on Friday, David and his fellow candidates had to wait until Monday morning for the results to be officially declared.

David told The Buteman: “I would like to thank all people who voted for me in the Scottish Youth Parliament election.

“During my two week campaign, I reached out to people within the school and people within the demographic community outside the school. I would like to thank them for taking time to listen to my key aims.

“I would like to thank all members of staff at the school, my family, Ann Kennovin, CLD youth worker for Bute, Rhiannon Burney, Bute youth work assistant, and Roanna Clark, Argyll and Bute Young Scot co-ordinator.

“I am looking forward to working with the community and taking a stand for young people. Thank you to all.”

In his manifesto, David pledged to fight to have local alcohol taxes put back into youth projects in Argyll and Bute, to improve educational access throughout Scotland, to have student fares introduced on CalMac ferries, to get more activities for young people in Argyll and Bute and to have the Rothesay tennis courts re-opened.

The other successful Argyll and Bute candidate was Fraser Stewart from Dunoon.
