The couple behind one of Rothesay’s top hotels left Bute on Saturday to start a new life in Mallorca.

Graham and Fiona Leonard, owners of the Cannon House Hotel in Battery Place, plan to live full-time in a cottage near Pollensa which they’ve used as a winter retreat for the last five years, after Graham was offered a job managing 25 holiday villas in the area.

“We’ve been thinking about it for a while,” Graham said, “but we didn’t finally decide to go ahead until a few weeks ago.

“It was a very difficult decision to leave Bute but a variety of different circumstances have made the decision for us - the job offer was too good an opportunity to miss, but ultimately Fiona’s health was the deciding factor.”

In addition to running the hotel with Fiona, Graham was also the founder of local internet radio station Radio Bute, whose volunteers made a farewell presentation to their former station manager on Friday.

“Radio Bute has been a great experience,” Graham continued. “It’s a great team and I’m sure they’ll carry on and go from strength to strength.”

The Cannon House Hotel has been on the market for some time; although the Leonards haven’t sold the property, Graham said there were “a couple of people” intereseted in leasing it and one couple exploring an outright purchase.
