Rothesay ‘Help’ clients win business project awards

Five clients of a Rothesay-based young tenancy project travelled to Edinburgh this week to collect two prizes for their participation in a national scheme aiming to introduce young people to the basics of setting up and running a small business.
The Bute group’s participation in the ‘Business in a Box’ initiative saw them given five hundred photographic greetings cards and told to sell as many as they could in aid of a local charity.
The girls, Christina Reilly, Morgan McFarlane, Gillian Junner, Naomi Reekie and Robyn Hassan, chose Bute’s Children, the local group which works to help children in need on the island, and visited HEROtsc, Fyne Homes, Mount Stuart, the Moat Centre and Rothesay Library to sell the cards at a profit of 20p each.
The project was organised in conjunction with Heartstone, a UK-based non-profit organisation established in 1990 to incorporate and use ‘The Heartstone Odyssey’, a magical fictional story which addressed a range of issues surrounding prejudice and intolerance in a unique and effective way.
As part of the project the group spoke to Geremy Cliff, a world-renowned shark expert based in South Africa, and enjoyed a private tour of Mount Stuart.
Three of the girls from Bute travelled to Edinburgh last week to attend an exhibition of their work at the Assembly Rooms in conjunction with Heartstone and Helping Heroes, whose veterans acted as mentors to the group.
Their project was judged by Sitakumari, director of Heartstone, Air Commodore Gerry Mayhew and various other dignitaries, and the girls were presented with two prizes by Angela Constance MSP, the Scottish Government’s minister for youth employment, and Major General Nick Eeles, the Army’s General Officer Commanding Scotland.
The project was organised through Eileen Kay, Argyll and Bute’s 16+ learning choices development officer, and delivered by the Help Project, a non-profit housing, employment and life skills project based in Rothesay and Dunoon and working with young people aged between 16 and 25.
Frances Jamieson from the Help Project said: “This was a once in a lifetime experience for the girls and they have asked me to pass on their appreciation for all who assisted and bought cards from them.”
