A member of Rothesay’s community firefighting team retired this week after 36 years with the service.

Retained firefighter Graeme Connor signed up with what was then Strathclyde Fire Brigade on January 11, 1977, and left this week with the best wishes of his friends and colleagues ringing in his ears.

Graeme told The Buteman that the responsibilities of his day job, as Scottish Water’s team leader for Bute, Cowal and west Dunbartonshire, meant he was no longer able to devote the time required to be a retained firefighter on the island.

Roddy Shaw, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue’s station officer at Rothesay, said: “Graeme is one of the longest-serving firefighters in the whole of Argyll and Bute, and we wish him all the best for the future - it’ll be a big job to replace his experience.”
