Rothesay Castle swans bring town to a halt
Local Strathclyde Police officers escort Rothesay Castle's swans towards the town's outer harbour on Monday morning.
ONE of Rothesay’s best-loved annual rituals took place on Monday morning as the family of swans who live in the grounds of Rothesay Castle left home for the open sea.
Local police were alerted as Maw, Paw and their ten cygnets - the largest group for some years - left the castle grounds and headed towards the seafront via Tower Street, Victoria Street and Guildford Square.
Two patrol cars and four officers on foot ensured Rothesay’s vehicular traffic was stopped to allow the group safe passage to the outer harbour, while around 50 onlookers gathered to watch the progress of the town’s most famous family towards Rothesay Bay.
