Staff at the Rothesay branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland have been rolling up their sleeves in aid of Bute charity Calum’s Cabin.

Employees at the Victoria Street branch have been helping with maintenance and changeovers at the two holiday homes on Bute which the charity uses to provide respite holidays for families with seriously-ill children.

And this week the bank added another dimension to its support for the charity in the form of a donation from RBS’s Community Support Fund.

Branch manager Lisa Aitken and the bank’s local chief executive Jamie Hogg presented the cheque to Caroline Speirs from Calum’s Cabin at the ‘new and nearly new’ shop run by the charity just round the corner from the bank.

“The branch staff have been very supportive,” Caroline said, “and we’re very grateful for the time they’ve volunteered and for the donation they’ve made.”

* Meanwhile, a stunning hand-carved chair made by a Bute craftsman and put up for auction to raise money for Calum’s Cabin will be presented to its new owner this weekend.

Ray Beverley originally made the chair as a demonstration piece for an exhibition at The Lighthouse in Glasgow last October, showcasing the work of more than 30 members of the Scottish Association of Furniture Makers.

The beautiful high-backed chair, ‘Meltwater’, featuring a running stream motif and a cheeky ‘puddle’ fashioned at the foot of one leg and currently on display at the Calum’s Cabin shop in Rothesay’s Tower Street,, will be given to its new owner after the silent auction closes this Saturday, March 2.
