Rothesay artificial pitch ‘would cost £600k’

The installation of a new artificial pitch in Rothesay suitable for football and other sports would cost around £600,000, Bute Community Council was told this week.

Councillor Len Scoullar told BCC members on Wednesday that Argyll and Bute Council had looked into the cost of an all-weather surface after users of the grass pitches at the Meadows and the public stadium in the town’s High Street expressed concern at the quality of existing drainage.

The grass pitch at the public stadium is the home ground of both the Rothesay Brandane amateur football team and Bute Youth Football Coaching’s under-16 team, whose regular league fixtures mean the surface is more heavily used than ever before.

Councillor Scoullar said the cost of a new artificial surface would be considered, along wtih other proposals, for inclusion in Argyll and Bute Council’s capital budget for the next financial year.

“I’m not suggesting it’s going to be done,” he said. “It’s simply going to be put in there as a possible project that would be beneficial to Bute.”

Questioned on the possibility of simply improving the existing all-weather surface at Rothesay Joint Campus, which is not currently suitable for organised league football matches, Cllr Scoullar said an upgrade to a ‘4G’ facility would not be suitable for sports such as hockey, currently part of the PE curriculum at the school.
