Rhona Simpson is Bute Highland Games chieftain

RHONA SIMPSON, Scotland’s most capped hockey player and the athletes’ representative on the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games board, will be the chieftain at this year’s Bute Highland Games.

Rhona, who has also scored more goals for Scotland than any other player, competed in two Olympic Games (Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000), three Commonwealth Games (Kuala Lumpur 1998, Manchester 2002 and Melbourne 2006) and two World Cups (Australia 1998 and Holland 2002) during her playing career.

She has also coached Scotland’s under-18 and under-21 national teams and was part of the coaching team for the Great Britain squad which won gold at the Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney in 2009.

One of only two Scottish athlete mentors for the Youth Sports Trust, Rhona, who grew up in Beith in north Ayrshire, travels throughout the UK to deliver her story to the country’s young people in the hope of inspiring the next generation to pursue a career in sport.

In her introduction as chieftain on the Bute Highland Games’ website, Rhona said: “I am looking forward to the experience of the Bute Highland Games and wish all competitors the best of luck.”

The 2012 Bute Games take place on Saturday, August 18 at the public park in Rothesay’s High Street.
