Resignation ‘a serious blow’ to SNP, says Bute councillor
The resignation of Argyll and Bute councillor Michael Breslin is a “serious blow” to the authority’s SNP group, according to one of his former colleagues.
Cllr Breslin stood down this week as the council’s spokesperson for education and lifelong learning, and as a member of the SNP group, citing a number of factors for his decision - principally the planned closure of the Struan Lodge care home in his Dunoon ward, which was backed by SNP members last month.
Cllr Breslin, who was elected to the council in May 2012, will now sit and vote as a non-aligned independent member in the council chamber.
His former colleague, Bute SNP councillor Robert Macintyre, told The Buteman: “I am very sorry that the SNP group has lost a councillor of the calibre of Michael Breslin.
“He was the ideal councillor for education given his many years of excellent stewardship of Argyll College.
“Sometimes highly emotive issues like Struan Lodge force councillors into unenviable choices and in this case Michael has decided to fight for Struan Lodge from outside the council administration.
“It is without doubt a serious blow to the SNP group of Argyll and Bute Council and personally I am deeply sorry about the whole business.”
