Residents affected by burst water mains
MANY island residents discovered on Sunday (March 3) they had no water supply, after a water mains burst at Loch Dhu - the principal water supply to the high-lying areas of the island.
The burst occurred on the trunk main from the Dhu Loch Water Treatment Works to Rothesay and resulted in a number of residents on Bute being without water, including the Kilchattan Bay and Kingarth area.
While Scottish Water announced later that day that the water mains had been fixed, they stated that the system was ‘recharging’ and that properties in upper areas of Rothesay ‘may still be without supply until the mains is fully recharged’.
The provision of bottled water was made, with pallets being dropped off at Roslin Crescent, Prospect Terrace, St Brides Road, Ardmory and the Ardencraig area.
However, the south end of the island was not included in that list, but following a resident’s phone-call to Councillor Scoullar, this was rectified and a supply was sent to Kilchattan Bay at 9.30pm last night.
However, some residents are still, this morning, without any water, and Scottish Water has made another delivery of bottled water to some areas of the town.
UPDATE: Scottish Water issued the following statement shortly after midday on Monday:
Scottish Water is apologising to customers on Rothesay who are continuing to experience problems with their water supply today.
Engineers re-connected supplies to households and businesses after repairing a burst to a 12inch trunk main yesterday.
While the action enabled much of the water supply to return to normal, a number of properties in high-lying areas of the island remain out of water or are experiencing low pressure.
Engineers have been working round the clock to resolve the problem and are looking at alternative measures to keep households in water.
Bottled water can be collected from the following locations - Roslin Crescent, St Bride’s Road and Kilchatten Bay.
The burst had occurred on the trunk main from the Dhuloch Water Treatment Works to Rothesay, which is the principal water supply to the high-lying areas of the island.
Emergency repair squads had to close the main and shut off the water supply to fix the burst yesterday lunchtime
A Scottish Water spokesman said: “We apologise to customers who are continuing to be affected by this incident.
“We believe that there is an air lock or air locks in the system which is preventing water supplies from reaching high-lying properties.
“We are working flat out to resolve this problem. We have delivered supplies of bottled water to the areas affected and will be ensuring fresh consignments are available for customers today.”
